Our journey

Aviation is facing a decisive decade. ALIGHT supports the transformation of airports and air transport towards a more sustainable future for industry, climate, and society.

Accelerating sustainable development in airports

ALIGHT focuses on two key areas: Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Smart Energy. By developing and demonstrating solutions for both, ALIGHT takes a holistic approach to decarbonise airport operations and flight activities. The project tests and documents the effects of SAF usage and smart energy measures—from supply chain, blending, storage, and certification to renewable electricity, storage, and electrification of vehicles. ALIGHT systematically monitors the impact on greenhouse gases and air quality, delivering insights on what works, under which conditions, and the full potential for airports.

A partnership for impact

ALIGHT gathers airports, airlines, fuel providers, industry experts, world-leading researchers, and SME innovators in a strong collaboration. This diversity ensures cross-sector expertise and accelerates pioneering solutions relevant for the entire aviation industry.

Sister Projects

ALIGHT is part of a strong network of pioneering projects, advancing climate-neutral aviation in Europe.

OLGA (hOListic & Green Airports) accelerates the environmental transition at airports led by Paris-Charles de Gaulle. OLGA takes a holistic approach, aiming to minimize the environmental footprint across passengers, airlines, and local communities. The project demonstrates replicable innovations in CO₂ reduction, air quality, and biodiversity.

STARGATE (SusTainable AiRports, the Green heArT of Europe), coordinated by Brussels Airport, focuses on developing and testing sustainable solutions for greener airport operations. Activities include electrification of ground handling, use of SAF, renewable energy sharing, local community engagement, and enhancing intermodal transport.

TULIPS (DemonsTrating lower pollUting soLutions for sustaInable airPorts acrosS Europe), led by Schiphol, showcases large-scale demonstrations for lower-emission ground transport, sustainable fuels, circular economy practices, and innovative technologies to improve air quality and multi-modal travel.

ALIGHT Objectives

ALIGHT’s objectives are to demonstrate and document practical pathways to zero-emission airport operations. The project fosters strong cooperation with similarinitiatives in Europe, enabling shared learning and best practice exchange. ALIGHT develops a comprehensive toolbox for replication and best-practice handbooks to ensure scalable implementation in airports of all sizes. By testing and adapting solutions in collaboration with four airport partners, ALIGHT paves the way for effective adoption and a bold, climate-neutral vision forsmart airports by 2050.
